Contactless Charging System for an Electric Car

Contactless Charging

Nissan Motors in collaboration with Showa Aircraft Industry Ltd has created a system that will allow recharging an electric vehicle without the necessity to plug it into grid.

The principle of operation is quite simple. Electromagnetic induction between two coils is used. The flow of electric current into the transmitting coil created magnetic field that induces current in the receiver that is located under the car.

The transmitting coil is inside a thin hermetically closed plate. It is possible to install it onto the pavement or directly under the surface. A parking space equipped with such plates would allow the electric vehicle drivers topping up by just parking their car in the recharging zone. No connection or plugging is necessary.

To add a little bit of science fiction, Nissan is allegedly planning to introduce special highway lanes with recharging plates installed so that the drivers can top up while continuing to drive.

It is believed that a Ukrainian company APowerCap is involved in this multinational project.

This is not the first indirect recharging system. Nedo has developed a distance microwave system. We have to remember that an indirect electricity generation system is more likely to be a subject of losses, i.e. not the whole 100pc of source energy will be transmitted to the electric car. However, contactless systems provide more safety and less space for abuse.
