Electric Cars – it Works for London

Mega Aixam
It’s been more than a year since I last visited London. South sucks you in, apparently. I didn’t notice a big difference – London is still nice and exciting (and Westend theatres still lack ventilation) – but there was something different about the streets. More electric cars and hybrid vehicles.
Obviously, the most popular electric car in London is the G-Wiz but there are others too – Mega Aixam gets some love from green motorists lately.
I was glad to see more and more delivery companies switching to electric cars. It is clear regarding the green freaks buying electric cars but if businesses are taking pluck to freshen up their fleets with some nerdy EVs, it’s really something of a trend.
And then there are hybrid vehicles too. Mostly Toyota Prius, mostly grey in colour (you can get a red, a blue and other colours too but hey, this is London and even Ferraris are grey there). More Honda Insight cars than a year before and even an odd Lexus.
However, the EV owners are not the only brave bunch of London’s runabouts. I’ve noticed a high increase in cyclists (should we say thanks to London mayor for showing a good example) and what’s even more surprising – velomobiles, both three- and four-wheelers. It’s quite a sight to watch them squeezing among buses on Picadilly Circus.
Electric milkmen still dashing around the city – you’re lucky to have an electric milkman. Many places in the South lost them recently to some retarded diesel “Transporters”.
Are there Benefits?
It depends on where you live. It is certainly a benefit to own an electric car in London:
- You avoid congestion charges if driving an EV. That’s right, you can roll past Trafalgar Square enjoying the comfort of your car without paying a farthing.
- You save loads of cash. Driving a car in London is extremely expensive because traffic is so slow. You consume too much fuel on accelerating and braking all the time.
- Did I say braking? You waste energy braking a normal car whereas you store energy braking an electric car. Great!
- An EV is smaller which makes it more convenient in the traffic and parking. A note on safety though – you wouldn’t want to have a collision in a small EV, especially when it carries all 4 passengers. But then in London high-speed collisions as rare as red Ferraris.
So, EV is not an item of luxury or a symbol of fake greenie status. It is something that is very convenient and reasonable for use in large cities. I cannot wait for it to progress further.
