Europe to Add More Bureaucracy to Electric Cars

Is there a reason to worry?

The EU wouldn’t be EU if they didn’t come up with another scheme to justify their existence. According to Brussels, standardisation is required for the electric car market to work. What they want is a standard charger across Europe. According to the EU, the main reason to introduce standard is that the US and Asia are already developing their standards.

It will come as an extra strain on electric car makers as they are already struggling to master something that doesn’t exist yet – the electric car market. Currently a unified policy is being developed and although the electric car makers are being consulted it remains to be seen if they benefit from the standards.

The biggest challenge awaits international companies like Nissan and Mitsubishi who will market their electric cars (Leaf and iMiev respectively) in Asia, North America and Europe. If those three regions adapt different standards, it will be a nightmare for the makers.

On a positive note, the EU is also talking about certain safety standards for alternative motoring. Does it mean that the Reva and other eggshell cars would disappear from European roads for good? If so, I shall review my Euroscepticism!
