Worldwide fuel powerty and sustainability issues have created a fertile soil for all sorts of crazy inventions to develop. There’s one of them: the HumanCar. It is a plug-in hybrid powered by a basic electric motor or… well, human power. This four-seater can be powered by passengers pushing a lever. It works just like the good old railway draisine handcar.

It is possible to exercise-power the car on your own, but whenever you feel tired, you can start the electric motor to gain assistance.

The inventor is taking backorders for the 2011 production version of the HumanCar Imagine PS. The reservation fee is just $50 and allegedly over 100 reservations had been made.

Although at a first glance this might look like a crazy idea, there is the Twike (an electric velomobile) and there is an oar boat, which never creates any controversy when seen on a river. So why not using your own power to propel a vehicle?

The retail price of the HumanCar Imagine PS is $15,500. The biggest challenge for the inventor is the funding. Ok, he’s got $5000 in reservation fees… what next? I believe there is a niche market for the HumanCars and I hope they succeed.
