Ford To Build a Battery Plant in Ypsilanti

27 May 2010 No Comment

Ford is cutting the carbon footprint of their electric car venture by ducking the established import channels. They’ve said no to Mexican batteries and Japanese drive elements. Two dedicated component factories will be built in Ypsilanti and Sterling Heights, both Michigan.

They plan to create more than 200 jobs in the region and cut their costs in the long run. The latest developments suggest that Ford is keen to bring as much manufacturing as possible under its own wing. I am wondering what does this stance mean for the Ford-Magna relationship?

In total $135 million will be invested in two new plants within the next couple of years. The United Automotive Workers union praised the Ford’s decision. No wonder. Today more and more manufacturers decide to move jobs to Asia compromising on the quality and job prospects of the local people. Really good news from the Ford camp this time.

Meanwhile Ford Focus electric car is scheduled to hit the dealerships later in 2011 with four further electric car models to follow in the next few years. It is likely that these cars will all feature parts made in Michigan.
