Free Minutes for your Electric Car

27 May 2009 No Comment

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to top up your electric car with power just like you do with your mobile phone. It is possible that London could soon see the first charging points for electric cars where you can pay-as-you-go using a dedicated key, just like the good old key-meter at some rental properties.

That would mean fair deal for everyone and in the end, better electricity tariffs. As the charging points would probably be operated by different energy companies, the fierce competition for scarce electric car owners would mean lower prices and hot deals - free minutes and bonuses.

It is expected that the top-up key meters would provide a lower tariff than that of household electricity. This sounds great… but then if you think about it, many electric car owners would be able to abuse the system by topping up with cheap electricity at charging points and “bringing it home” for household use.

Wouldn’t it be easier to get more efficient and lower electricity prices generally thus offering the same fixed price both at charging points and home?

If the plan goes ahead, the new top-up system will be implemented by Elektromotive EBConnect.
