French Vandals Gearing Up For the Electric Cars

4 August 2010 No Comment

The Parisian authorities have devised a plan to launch a 3000-fleet of electric cars for public sharing. The program, codenamed AutoLib, will replicate the VeLib program that allows the Frenchmen to share electric bikes.

The idea as such is a good one – you book the car when you need it, leave it at a specially designed lot and forget about it. No worrying about insurance, parking and maintenance. People who don’t use a car on a regular basis will find AutoLib extremely convenient.

The biggest challenge for the new car sharing program is the vandals. When the VeLib first appeared, of the 20,000 bikes made available, more than a third ended up in Seine (different from “insane”, actually) or victimized by urban artists. If Paris devises a way of protecting the electric cars from vandals, our mayor will find it quite challenging to respond with a better scheme.
