Global Warming is Good Business
US Chamber of commerce has stirred controversy by filing a request with the EPA for a hearing on a science-based evidence behind claims that global warming is a threat to human race. It has fuelled anger from all sorts of chain-yourself-to-whatever and other eco-basher organisations. They are screaming that this is a certain losing-game for EPA and the scientists.
Well, if the science cannot prove that this instance of global warming is human-induced, let them lose! What did I mean by “this instance”? Simple – this is not the first global warming on the Earth… and not the last one. There have been at least four major ice ages and consecutive global warming stages in the planet’s past. During warmer periods Earth has been ice-free even around the poles.
Who induced those previous thawing periods? Will you blame humans? Oh, maybe it was an unknown tribe of cavemen who built cars and polluted the environment?
I’ll give you food for thought and, although it is no revelation, I hope it will knock some eco-bashers off their potties. Earth is constantly undergoing subsequent glacials and interglacials – in layman’s terms it is that each period of icesheet formation is followed by an icesheet retreat. The latest retreat began when? Did it begin when Henry Ford built his model T and set the precedent of mass CO2 pollution? No (drum roll) – the latest retreat begun 10,000 years ago and it will probably go on for another 10,000 years regardless of whether you drive a V8 muscle car or ride a bicycle (you can also ride a white swan if that makes you feel less guilty). Don’t get me wrong, we are probably contributing to making this process faster!
Ice ages replace Greenhouses every 20,000 to 100,000 years. Will the poles thaw this time? Most likely they will but tell you what, you won’t live to see that. The climate on Earth has been in a constant change and it will go on changing with or without our help. That’s why I feel that we need to concentrate more on things like fighting pollution and saving rainforests, preserving the beauty of nature for our kids.
On September 22 world leaders held a meeting to ask for immediate steps to combat climate change. Why did they do that? To drive our attention away from their mischief and from economic problems they cannot or don’t want to solve. Besides global warming is a good business.
If you are a new entrepreneur wishing to start a new business but lacking good ideas, ride the global warming wave and you are likely to make a bundle of guineas. Here is how you can exploit pseudo-environmentalism and do some greenwashing:
- Build a gadget that will save somebody 1pc off their electricity bill even if it takes CO2 intensive processes and hazardous ingredients to produce one.
- Start oil-sands extraction project, claim it is a part of sustainable energy project and pollute the environment with nasties.
- Start an organization, campaign for environment, get naked, chain yourself to a chimney and solicit for donations.
Why the irony, you may ask? Don’t get me wrong. I am a green-minded person. I fight pollution and support rainforest saving campaigns (because of the animals and plants that need protection). I have my fingers in a pie of sustainable development and improving recycling processes but when it comes to Global warming, I will to certain extent support US chamber of commerce and dare the science. This is how the world works. If you claim something, you have to prove it. Can I prove that people don’t make this instance of global warming worse? No, I cannot, but can you prove (scientifically) that they do? Do I morally feel that we need to do something about global warming? Yes I do, but, hey, don’t fret about it too much.
