We’ve got the hybrid vehicle sales data courtesy of Nada.org. This is not great news for the hybrid manufacturers but there is also nothing to be too worried about. In December 2009 the sales picked up a little compared to the previous month but it didn’t help the tally and compared to the previous year, we are still more than 25,000 cars short.

What can we say to the “experts” who claimed that the sector would pick up and see a boom?

In December 2009 25,167 HVs were sold, which was a 24% increase from November. Commercial vehicles were on a rise too - 4,901 in December and a 33.5% gain.

Now, when it comes to yearly figures, here’s what happened. In 2008 250,462 passenger HVs were sold in USA. This year only 236,755 - a 5.5% slump. Last year saw 65,226 commercial hybrids finding their owners and this is where the sharpest decrease occurred. Year of 2009 18% down to 53,477 trucks. That’s how the total vehicles sold fell below 300,000.

What cards does this year hold for the ailing sector? We’ll see but if the parking benefits for HV owners are cut, USA will struggle to sell a quarter a million of cars. We are fluctuating around this figure since 2006 and the manufacturers would of course love to see it moving uphill.
