The general perception is that it is hugely expensive to start up in car business making this industry inaccessible for new companies. This is not exactly true. The South African Optimal Energy – a 5-year old establishment – has shown a beautiful electric car called Joule. It is one of the Geneva 2010 favourites. The company plans to start production in 2013 and make around 50,000 cars per year.

This is by all means not a small car. It really fits the company name as it is optimal – the Joule is a proper-size five-seater and once it approaches the pre-production stage, I expect it will pass a crash-test without a problem.

This is approximately how I anticipate a green car of the future to be looking. Hopefully the mini-car-death-trap mania will end soon.

Optimal Energy Joule will be highway capable and the price prediction seems quite realistic – around £18,500. The company plans to make their own batteries thus cutting the costs and making the retail price more attractive.
