Mobility Plan Kicks off in Madrid, Spain

29 December 2009 No Comment

The local energy company Gas Natural in partnership with Iberdrola have joined to promote electric cars in Madrid. Both companies plan to install 280 recharge points for electric cars in Spanish capital.

The pilot is called “Mobility Plan” and it is estimated it will cost EUR 1.3 million. 43% of the necessary money will be provided by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDEA) with the 57% being contributions from private investors.

The first stage of the project will involve evaluating the map of Madrid to decide which parts of the city require the recharge points the most. It is expected that Barcelona and Seville will joint he “Mobility Plan” later. Meanwhile, Madrid city council has announced they have set a goal to get rid of ALL petrol cars that are currently being used by their officers and switch to alternative motoring in 2011.

UPDATE (08/01/2010): I’ve just found out that SEAT is too involved in the “Mobility Plan”. The Mayor of Barcelona praised them as a company looking at green solutions. They will take part in installing the recharging points. That can only mean one thing: SEAT are back on track with development of their electric car. It was presented a year ago but with a 30 miles range it didn’t look promising. Hopefully they will announce a new prototype soon. Let’s wait.
