Scots will Drive Electric Cars and Export Green Energy

Scotland Goes Green
According to the Scottish branch of the WWF website, the highlanders are planning to replace 10% (290,000 units) of petrol cars with battery electric vehicles by 2020. The plan is to reduce Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 42% and driving green cars should make a great contribution towards that goal. If you ask me, I’m a wee bit sceptical about this matter.
Two issues have to be considered. One is to persuade 290,000 Scots to scrap their petrol cars and the other one is to support the electric car movement with renewable energy. Otherwise, if they continue using coal electricity for powering the electric cars, the 42% CO2 reduction target will remain as distant as it is now.
To the first issue Dr Sam Gardener answers with a brave assertion that by 2020 all council and government workers will be driving electric cars. All of them, 100%. It is needed to show the good example and set a precedent.
The second issue will be tackled as well. Approximately a year ago the same WWF website claimed that a research has proved that it is possible to get Scotland off the grid.
The most realistic scenario sees them enjoying 60% green energy. The wildest scenario suggests that they could achieve a whopping 143% of country’s annual electricity demand by 2030. It would mean that Scotland would export huge amount of electricity to other countries. What a green perspective that is!
